002507

(2) Case studies have been performed on selected days. Analyses
have developed relationships between mesoscale features and have
identified factors significantly influencing convection, such
as wet bulb potential temperature field and its associated verti-
cal velocity field.

(3) Decision-tree development concentrated on determining which
mesoscale and synoptic features correlate most significantly with
convective development.

(4) A climatology of severe weather warnings was completed, using
information from the National Weather Service local warning system
and the NSSL (National Severe Storms Laboratory). The study
indicates that warnings are issued on 20 to 60 percent of the days
during a summer field season and that six to seven local warnings
are issued for each one issued by NSSL.

(5) The contractor has developed algorithms for the automatic
detection and tracing of rain cells for processing digital weather
radar data. The radar cells are defined by contours 3 dB below
enclosed reflectivity peaks which do not enclose other cells.
Cell attributes such as reflectivity area and location are com-
puted and compiled.

CONTRACTOR: Meteorology Research, Inc., Altadena, California
CONTRACT NO. 14-06-D-7699
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Theodore B. In 1975, an instrumentation package designed around a
digital recording system was constructed for the MRI Piper Navajo.
This aircraft was used at HIPLEX sites for the summer seasons of
1975-78, and the aircraft data set provided useful information on
cloud characteristics at all three HIPLEX sites.

In 1976, the aircraft system was modified for major improvements in
real-time display capabilities by installing an onboard minicomputer.
A postflight tape copying ability was also implemented. Improved
software capability permitted better data quality control. During

111-20
