OAr.:: ',,..
0' .;;) JJ

factor from convective storms under a phased introduction of new
components into an existing radar system. The total radar was
operated during the 1976 HIPLEX research project in Texas and pro-
vided data for analyzing storm characteristics and for developing the
HIPLEX cloud climatology.

Digital scan autocontrol, digital data acquisition systems, and video
time-lapse recording were implemented. A central data acquisition/
control facility was created. Capabilities of the reconfigured
system include antenna-slaved dual-wavelength measurements at 10 cm
and 3 cm, contoured range-normalized displays, and programmable scan
sequencing.

CONTRACTOR: University of Washington, Seattle, Washington
CONTRACT NO. 14-06-0-7664
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Peter V. Hobbs
PERIOD: May 1, 1975, to December 1, 1976
FUNDING: FY75 - $30,296
FY76 - $90,888

The contract objective was to conduct aerosol survey studies in
connection with HIPLEX. Surveys were conducted over the entire
High,Plains region between Miles City, Montana, and Big Spring,
Texas, to study the number of natural nuclei in the air. It was
found that aerosol concentrations are dependent upon airmass type,
source proximity, and aerosol size and type. Aerosol size distribu-
tions were bimodal in nature. Concentrations were lowest in and near
precipitation areas, and salt particles were found only in strong
southerly flows. High concentrations of both condensation and ice
nuclei were found near dust storms. The study provided explicit
information on the natural aerosol background to which cloud seeding
agents may be introduced.

CONTRACTOR: Western Scientific Services, Inc., Fort Collins,
Colorado
CONTRACT NO. 14-06-0-7665
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Curtis Hartzell
PERIOD: May 15, 1975, to February 28, 1978
FUNDING: FY75 - $10,193
FY76 - $43,896
T.Q. - $29,293
FY77 - $76,959
FY78 - $ 7,092

The contractor provided meteorological support services
1975-77 field seasons at the Miles City, Montana HIPLEX
servi~es consisted of operating rawinsonde equipment to

during
site.
obt ai n

the
These

III-18
