Zopf <br />PERIOD: July 1, 1974, to November 30, 1976 <br />FUNDING: FY75 $453,084 <br />FY76 - $ 6,022 <br />1.Q. - $ 33,660 <br /> <br />EG&G was awarded this contract to conduct randomized seedin9 opera- <br />tions for the five CRBPP winter research seasons. To accomplish <br />this task, EG&G established a complete weather forecasting and <br />analysis center in Durango, Colorado. Here, onsite data and infor- <br />mation from national circuits were evaluated to assemble a meteorolog- <br />ical diagnosis of storm systems affecting the San Juan study area. <br />In addition to the CRBPP data network, information was provided by <br />the SCS (Soil Conservation Service), National Weather Service, and <br />Geological Survey data collection systems. <br /> <br />Two types of ground cloud seeding generators were used in the pro- <br />ject, a remote control model manufactured by North American Weather <br />Consultants and a manually operated model designed especially for the <br />project by EG&G. A tot al of 35 generators were used in the two <br />project subareas. Data were collected during 147 experimental <br />periods. <br /> <br />; <br />t <br />, <br />. <br />, <br />t <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />EG&G's evaluation of seeding results pinpointed four cloud systems <br />that responded favorably to ground-based seeding, three orographic <br />systems, and one deep g~neral cloud type. Other cloud types that <br />contribute positively to the precipitation regime under more restric- <br />tive meteorological circumstances were also identified. An interest- <br />ing facet of the evaluation was the indicated potential for continu- <br />ous seeding during many storm events even though the cloud types were <br />continually changing. This concept could alleviate forecasting <br />burdens in future programs.
