<br />OIJO{51 <br /> <br />DNR RESPONSE: IM:C STATEWIDE CONCERNS <br /> <br />1. What steps is the department taking to respond to the year 2000 risk? Did the Department <br />respond to the OSP&B Year 2000 survey? <br /> <br />Minerals and Geology anticipated the date change iIi their PC applications and took care of the <br />date issue in the Wang application during the migration which ended on August 15, 1996. Parks <br />and Soil database dates are already stored in four-digit format. <br /> <br />Sateiiite Monitoring System staff are aware of the probiem and win deveiop a pian to address <br />it. Our dBase applications are not an issue because the software uses a four-digit display. <br /> <br />CaRIS uses the INFORMIX database, which stores dates in four-digit format. <br /> <br />SUMS and COGIMS display some dates as year-only and some including the century. The <br />problem will be addressed when the systems are rewritten between 1997 and 1999. <br /> <br />The department did respond to the Year 2000 survey. <br /> <br />2. Does the department have a tested disaster recovery plan in place? What steps has the <br />department taken to ensure business resumption in the case of a disaster? <br /> <br />Since June 1992 the department has had in place a tested disaster recovery plan for its Wang <br />mini-computers. Now that the Wang computers have been retired, department staff will adapt <br />this existing disaster recovery plan to the new Unix platform. Many parts of that plan (Le., <br />contact names, emergency phone numbers, off-site storage, etc.) apply in the LAN environment <br />also. <br /> <br />3. <br /> <br />Does any continued growth of disk usage at GGCC correspond to increases in the <br />department's client base? Has the department established any purge criteria for its <br />applicatioins and data? Are all new department systems being developed with archiving <br />and purging criteria? Has this criteria been reviewed by the State Archives to meet the <br />legal requirements for retaining information? <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />The department's disk usage at GGCC is declining. Although we run our data through programs <br />stored at GGCC, the only data DNR stores at GGCC is COFRS data, which does contain <br />purging and archiving criteria. The department assumes this criteria is accepll!ble with State <br />Archives. - <br /> <br />4. <br /> <br />What step is the department taking to ensure protection of its systems and data against <br />illegal intrusion and attack? <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />All logons are password protected. <br />All dial-ins use a call-back feature plus passwords. <br />DNR has purchased a CISCO router, and staff are working with GGCC staff to use it as an <br />internal firewall. <br />On an on-going basis, ITS staff retain users to keep their passwords secret and not share <br />them. <br />DNR programmers hard-code logon IDs into programs to limit accessibility <br />
