It first impounded water-on January 17, <br />1950. It also is operated by the Department of the Interior. <br /> <br />Headgate Rock, Imperial, Laguna and Mor~lo~ Dams;and Palo Verde Da~ . <br />These five dams are dhrersion dams for irrig~tion projects and have <br />no appreciable storage capacity. .' , <br />Headgate Rock Dam is located 15 miles below Parker Dam an~ serves <br />as the diversion point for the Colorado River Indian Reservation in <br />Arizona. Palo Verde Dam.completed asapermanent'structure ~n i957, <br />and located 42 miles below Headgate Rock Dam, serves as the diversion <br />point for the Palo Verde Ir~igation District. The Imperial Dam, lo- <br />cated 90 miles below Palo Verde Weir and 18.miles above Yuma, Ari, <br />zona, is the diversion point for the All-American Canal, the Yuma <br />Project, and,.the Gila Project. Laguna Dam;., located 5 miles. below <br />Imperial.Dam was formerly used as the diversion point for the Yuma <br />and North Gila Valley projects and dates back to 1910. Morelos Dam <br />is located below Pilot Knob between Arizona and Mexico and serves <br />as a diversion point for the Mexican Canal irrigating Mexicali Valley. <br /> <br />The Ail-American Canal System <br />The All-American Canal System received its first significant use in <br />1940, replacing the. older Alamo Canal whichiwas mostly in. Mexico. <br />From its headworks at Imperial Dam the canal stretches westward <br />across Imperial County roughly. parallel to the Mexican border. for <br />36.2 miles. The facility is .used by the Imperial Irrigation District, <br />which was formed ;in 1911 and is the largest such district in the state, <br />encompassing about,. one million. acres. First diversions in this area <br />were ,lJ;!. 1901. At this point the Coachella ,branch of the canal then <br />leads in a northwesterly direction for 123, 'miles while the main canal.. <br />extends westward another 44 miles. 'l'he Coaehella branch also serves <br />the Coachella Valley County Water District and was completed in <br />1948. The Coachella District, which was formed in 1918, includes more <br />than 267,000 acres and is located in Riverside and Imperial Counties. <br />First diversions to Coachella were in 1949. <br />Diversions through the All-American Canal for the period 1951-55 <br />averaged 5,232,000 acre,feet per year, with 3,836,000 acre,feet diverted <br />annually for the Imperial Irrigation District and the Coachella Val- <br />ley County Water District, and 1,396,000 diverted annually for the <br />Yuma Project. This Project's Reservation Division serves about 15,000 <br />acres of land in California in the area between the Colorado River and <br />the All-American Canal across from Yuma, Arizona. The project re- <br />ceives water from the All-American Canal and includes a large amount <br />of Indian land. <br />
