002006 o Reasons for wanting the river in the system included a desire to protect outstandingly remarkable scenery and recreation, and a desire to stop construction of the dam and reservoir. ' Study Team Recommendation The study team recommended the entire study area be included in the National System. This would include 35 miles of river and 7,400 acres of adjacent land with the following classifications: o Upper North Fork and entire South Fork, 17 miles of river and 3,800 acres, classified as wild river area; o Upper mainstem, Middle Fork, and lower North Fork, 12 miles of river and 2,700 acres, classified as scenic river area; and o Lower main stem, 6 miles of river and 900 acres, classified as recreational river. Impacts of Designation (from Study Report) o County zoning or scenic easement acquisition would be necessary along the lower main stem and lower North Fork to protect river values. o Access easements would be necessary. o The potential Hinman Park Reservoir, on the lower main stem, could not be developed. o There would be an annual loss of lOO,OOO board feet of timber, O.l man-year of employment, and $700. income. o Seven-hundred recreation visitor-days more than current use would have to be accommodated at a cost of $908,500. o Approximately 5,300 acres would be withdrawn from mineral entry. Current Legislation (S. 10B4) S. 1084 would eliminate approximately 6 miles of the lower main stem recommended for designation as recreational river in the final study report. This was done to eliminate the impacts of designation on 545 acres of private lands and to allow - development of Hinman Park Reservoir. bm -2-
