LOCATION

Along the Yampa River and its tributaries of Fortification and
Elkhead Creeks near Craig, Colorado. Also to be investigated 1.
an area between the Vamps, White, and CYeen RiVeT in northwestern
Colorado and northeastern Utah.

PROJECr PLAN

Feasibility investigations are currently in progress and have not
reached the stage where a final plan can be 8elect~. Based on
preliminary data the plan would include utilizing tbe surplus flows
of Elkhead Creek, Fortification Creek. and Yamps River for project
use in the vicinity of Craig and Maybell. Colorado. California Park
Reservoir on Elkhead Creek and Rampart Reservoir on Fortification
Creek would be constructed to provide flood control. recreation,
fish and wildlife opportunities, and in-igation water to supplemental.
service lands in both drainages and to l~ited full service lands
mainly along Fortification Creek. The environment and public health
condition would benefit with the control of spring floods in the
area.

Juniper Reservoir to be constructed on the lampa River would provide
water for municipal and industrial uses, power generation at the
'dam, recreation, fish and wildlife, and irrigation of project landa
in Axial Basin, Deception Creek, and along the lampa River below
the reservoir. Project lands in the Deception Creek area are marg-
inal if irrigated by gravity systems but their productivity would
. be greatly increased by sprinkler in-igation methods. The justi-
fication of sprinkler irrigation will be determined by future studies.
The inclusion of irrigation for the Deadman Bench area does not
appear favorable at this time, however the need for municipal and
industria 1 water in the area needs to be further explored.
