.

.

. .

(

Engineering

A reconnaissance of the watershed was made to locate potential
reservoir sites. Sites on Saguache Creek, Sheep Creek and Middle Creek
were considered. The Saguache Creek site was selected as it has the
. greatest yield potential for storage of the three sites. tlith the
Saguache Creek reservoir it is doubtful that additional water is available
for storage above the irrigation demand.

Cost estimates for the reservoir are based on physical data from
the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle sheets, quantity estimates based on pre-
liminary design and estimated unit costs for contract work in the araa.

The irrigation demand was developed for grass hay and pasture using
consumptive use developed according to TR-2l and estimated field and
project efficiencies. Reservoir operations studies with 50% ,and 70%
chance supplies were made to give a preliminary estimation of the storage
capacity needed and the acres that would be provided a full supply.

Canal rehabilitation cost estimates were developed from par a~
costs of rehabilitation of other systems under P,L. 566 watG~shed p~ojocts
in Colorado.

(

Work plan developmant will include: (1) a detailed survey of the
reservoir site; (2) an extensive water management study to determine the
effect of improved practices on the water table and crop yields;&nd
(3) surveys of the irrigation distribution system.

Geologic Investigations

A brief preliminary geologic investigation was made at the Middle
Creek, Sheep Creek and the Upper Saguache Creek sites. A backh~ was
used to dig test holes in prospective bo~ areas so field classification
of the materials could be made.

During work plan development, a geologic map of the reservoir site
tIill be pNlpaNld, and several Nlpresentative samples of borrow matorial
will be submitted for soils laboratory analysis. Sufficient investigation
of the site will be made to assura: (1) reasonable estimates of foundation
strength; (2) need for foundation tNatnr.mt; (3) emergency spillw<::y
stability; and (4) availability of suitable fill material and its
stabili ty in the etilbankment.

0672

(~

10
