Working Document for Discussion Only (last updated 09 Sep 1998) <br /> <br />These issues have been identified during product development and distribution. It is meant for <br />illustration and discussion. Documentation such as the system logs may have additional information. <br />Important note: an official release of Java 1.2 is due to be released in November, 1998. <br /> <br />CRDSS Hot List (technical challenges and status) <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Issue: No Java mapping tool from ESRI due in the near future and no mapping tool has been <br />implemented in StateMod or other applications. Action: RTi investing own time to implement a <br />Java mapping tool that uses shapefiles. <br />Issue: Printing from Java is not well implemented. Action: RTi is studying the problem. Sun <br />has fixed many problems that exist in 1.1.5 in the 1.2 release. <br />Issue: Word to HTML does not reliably result in nice-looking output. Action: Wait for next <br />version of Word to correct problem. Generate HTML from Word and allow formatting problems. <br />Issue: No PostScript output for makenet. Action: RTi investing own time to implement <br />PostScript generation capability. Working version is close to being implemented. <br />Issue: Graphing tool only handles grid-based data; therefore some graphing operations are not <br />enabled or are slow. Action: RTi is developing a work-around. All packages that have been <br />tested are based on gridded data sets. <br />Issue: The scroll bars on text areas are inconsistent and cause text to highlight unexpectedly. <br />Action: The new text area in 1.2 should perform better. RTi is testing to verify that this is a <br />workable solution that will perform as desired. <br />Issue: Performance of some graphical components is slow, especially the WIS and StateMod <br />GUI edit screens. Action: RTi is testing Java 1.2. It greatly improves performance in some <br />components but others (Jtable) are slow. We are also investigating options of using existing 3'd_ <br />party tools with 1.2. <br />Issue: CWRAT and other applications running over the Internet have trouble with fuewalls. <br />Action: RTi is reviewing materials on the Sun Developer Connection regarding this issue but a <br />visit to outside users will likely be necessary to resolve issues. <br />Issue: Other performance issues: Action: RTi continues to analyze code and makes <br />improvements with each release of the software. Our goal is to always increase performance with <br />each release. <br />Issue: Access does not handle the same queries that INFORMIX does. Item: For CWRAT, implement an "Administrative Summary" which displays current calls, real- <br />time streamflow, etc., summarized on one report. Action: Not scoped or budgeted. <br />. Item: GUI for DMIs. Action: Not scoped or budgeted. Would like to use the makenetlWIS <br />network code to produce and integrated schematic-based interface to DMIs and the StateMod <br />GUL <br />. Item: Update entire system to Java 1.2. Action: Not scoped or budgeted. This is necessary to <br />take advantage of new features but presents technical problems with components. RTi is <br />investigating individual issues and will have an integrated approach in the future, faster if budget <br />is set aside. <br /> <br />I <br />
