5.0 The Edit Menu ~ ',; ., 5.2 Modem Communications Communications settings may be accessed through the Preferences dialog. Here you can set the phone number for the application to dial for SPWRMS server connection, as well as the communications pon and baud rate for your modem. These properties can also be changed from the Communica- tions/Dial menus. Advanced users may want to add a modem initialization string to their dial sequence. 5.2.1 Modem Configuration Default modem configuration settings are COM3 and 9600 baud for use with Gateway Colorbook Computers and PCMCIA modems. Although the card modems issued to Water Commissioners have a 2400 baud data rate, setting the baud to 9600 tells the modem to per- form error checking and some compression, making communications slightly faster and more error-free. If the hardware setup on your PC differs from the standard Water Commissioner setup, you may need to modify the specified modem configuration settings. 5.2.2 Phone Number Lists PC-SPWRMS maintains a list of phone numbers. You will want to modify this list to include numbers for both the Denver and Greeley modems. Click the Edit Ph. # button in the Preferences dialog. To add a number to the list, edit the number and description, then click the Add# button. If you just want to edit an existing number, you do not need to click Add#. For long distance numbers, include the appropriate string of numbers for credit card dialing. Use one or more commas to pause (as before entering your credit card number).
