<br />001118 <br /> <br />" <br /> <br />IV. THE CHATTOOGA RIVER <br /> <br />The Chattooga River was designated as part of the National Wild and Scenic <br />River System in 1974. The designated portion of the river extends from <br />below Cahsier's Lake in North Carolina to Tugaloo Reservoir and the <br />West Fork of the Chattooga River from its junction with the mainstem" <br />upstream for over 7 miles. The total designated area is about 57 miles <br />long, The river is administered by the National Forest Service of the <br /> <br />U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Chattooga River flows through <br /> <br />J: <br />n <br />1 <br />1 <br /> <br />several national forests and has three forest supervisers who are <br /> <br />located as follows: Chattahookhee-Oconee National Forests, and the <br /> <br />Gainsville Georgine. Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests at <br /> <br />Columbia, South Carolina and the National Forest at Asheville, North <br />Carolina. <br /> <br />Prior to discussin9 those issues which arose in our examination of the <br /> <br />! <br /> <br />Chattooga, it should be noted that it was on this river that the popular <br /> <br />film "Deliverence" was made. This film not only caused increased use <br /> <br />of the Chattooga but was also influential in the nationwide growth in <br />the popularity of whitewater canoeing. <br /> <br />A. Issues <br /> <br />- INCREASE IN RECREATION USE <br /> <br />The combination of designation. the film "Deliverence" and growing <br /> <br />popularit~ of the sport of canoeing resulted in large increases in use. <br />Recently however this visitation has leveled off.
