~I. "

001231

Against this backdrop of intensified competition for Colorado River water, the state
has begun the development of an integrated information and analysis system -- the Colorado
River Decision Support System (CRDSS).
The system will take about four years to develop and cost about $#,
The first two years will focus on obtaining and organizing a wide range of basic water
resource information. This includes: using computer tools developed by the U,S, Bureau of
Reclamation to examine current water uses and storage in the entire Colorado River Basin;
developing additional tools to determine the amount of Colorado River water use in
Colorado; and developing mechanisms to evaluate the potential for new uses,
The result will be a computer system that contains key information that will enable
state water policy makers and administrators to obtain reliable answers when changes to
Colorado River policy or operations are proposed,
CRDSS is a joint undertaking of the Colorado Water Conservation Board and the
Colorado Division of Water Resources. The system will be available to both these agencies,
as well as to a wide variety of water users and others.
The consulting team that is developing CRDSS is headed Riverside Technology, Inc"
of Fort Collins and includes Colorado State University and W.W, Wheeler and Associates, A
technical advisory committee of major Colorado River water users is helping to guide the
project.
Additional information on the CRDSS is available from project manager Ross Bethel
at (303) 866-3441, ext. 308,

###
