I

2023

I

Salinity concentrations in these irrigation water sources vary

markedly; however, irrigation water salinity is not sufficiently

high to result in barley yield reductions. For example, Mancos
River water salinity, which is the highest of the potential

irrigation water sources, is well below the 5300 micromhos/cm

critical concentration which if exceeded may affect barley yield.

I'
,I

I
1
I
I
t
I
I
I
I

Crop cultural practices are summarized in Table 6.18. These

cultural practices are used in each climatic zone judged suitable for
barley production. Fertility requirements, summarized in Table

6.19, vary in each climatic zone.

I

I'

6.2.4 Grain Corn
Based on Colorado Agricultural Statistics published by the Colorado
Department of Agriculture, Colorado ranked sixteenth in the United
States in grain corn production during 1984 with approximately
91,120,000 bushels harvested from about 680,000 acres. The average
irrigated grain corn yield was approximately 137 bushels per acre
while the dryland yield averaged about 35 bushels/acre in 1984.
About 97 percent of the harvested grain corn acreage in Colorado was
irrigated in 1984. Grain corn production in Southwest Colorado is
significantly limited by prevailing climatic conditions. In 1984,
the total area planted to grain corn in Montezuma and La Plata
counties was 1,100 irrigated acres with only about 200 acres
harvested. The harvested acreage was located in La Plata County and

had an average yield of about 100 bushels/acre.

I
,

I
I

I

I

I'

6- 28
