~ ... ~ . ,.. ...
L l' ~ li ~ I

.

Photograph - 5 Hogback Canal, Test Pond No.4 Looking at
upstream dam being constructed.

Canal 8eepaqe Tests

.

Seepage tests on the Hogback Canal were conducted between October
26 and November 10, 1992. Cross sections and canal bottom
gradients were surveyed by Reclamation personnel in September
1992 for each test site. Earth dams to form test ponds 3 and 4
were constructed on October 28 and 29 with help from the Navajo
Tribe. Water was diverted to the canal to fill these ponds on
October 29 and staff gage readings were taken at varying
intervals for a 72 hour period ending November 2, 1992. Test
pond 2 was constructed on November 2 and 3, 1992 and filled on
the afternoon of November 3. Staff gage readings were again
taken at varying intervals for approximately 120 hours ending
November 9, 1992. Test pond 1 was constructed on November 4 and
5, 1992 and filled on November 6th. Staff gage readings were
taken for 72 hours ending November 10. Weather during these
tests was mostly sunny and windy with no measurable
precipitation.

Canal Seepaqe Rates

.

Staff gage readings and seepage rate calculations can be found in

5
