~tln33

22

Several advantages accrue to the development of neVi survey-based models of
the study region: (1) great detail on local government receipts and expendi-
tures and on other local social services ~Jhich does not exist in prior models
can be obtained; (2) county by county data can be developed allOl'Jing various
aggregations by region appropriate for local, county, state and federal planning
bodies; and (3) the accuracy and quality of the measurement of the direct plus
indirect effects of resource change in the study region will be greatly
enhanced. With regard to the last point, only t~1O prior models exist. These
models are quite old, do not cover a large part. of the study region, arc based
partly or wholly on rough estimates from secondary data sources and do not
provide detail on government.al and social services. The usefulness of an
input.-output modell ing effort is in direct. ratio to the rel iabil ity and det:ai I
cont.ained in the table of flows of spendinq (aocl physical inputs) ilmon9 the
economic sectors of the region,
Purchases and sales data for the agricultural production sectors will be
coll ected joiotly by researchers invol ved in the Linear Programming modell ing
effort and researchers involved in the Input-Output modelling effort, Close
contact and overlapping team membership will prevent unnecessary dupl ication
of the field survey.
The following table provides a listing of t.he economic sectors appropriate
for the eastern high plains of Colorado, ^ more det.ailed breakdown of the
crops contained in the irrigated and/or dryland agriculture sectors may also
be desired, The extent of this disaggregation will depend on the level of detail
defined in the linear prograJlIIJlinq res(~,lrch.
