FOR WATER CONSERVATION AND UTILIZATION
FINDIllG OF FEASIBILITY AND APPROVAL

0377

The Secretary of the Interior
Washington. October 21. 1940

THE PRESI DENT .
THE \HnTE HOUSE.

(Through the Bureau of the Budget)

My dear Mr. President.

In f.\.Ooordl1J!De with the requirements of the act of August 11. 1939 (~
stat. 1418) as amended. I submit this report on the Mamos irrigation pro-
jsct in Montez_ County. Colorado. aild request your approval of t he find-
ings and oert1fioatt01 contained herein.

PROJECT plAN

The proposed work involves the co:n.struotiOll of a storage reservoir on
Jaokson Guloh. about 4 miles north of the town of Manoos. an inlet canal to
take water from the West Mancos B1ver. and deliver it to the reservoir. and
en outlet oanal to whioh water will be released from the reservoir and re-
turned to the river. The diversion and distribution system for till project
lends has already been r.onstruoted. The dClll will be an earth-fill structure.
1'0 feet high above the stream bed and 1.9'0 feet long across the orest. The
inlet oanal will be of 2;0 seoond-feet oapaoity and appro:dms.tely , miles in
length. The Q1tlet canal will be of 200 seoond-feet capaoity and less then
3 miles long. Tbe reservoir back of the deIll will have a oapaoity of 10.000
acre-teet.

'l'he project lands. oompr1siDg approximately 10.000 aores. are situated
in the valley along the Mancos Rtver ll$ar the town of Mancos. The Manoos
Valley. one of the oldest irrigated seotions in western Oolorado. has been
settled for over 60 years. but many years ago the eoonomio limit of settle- ."
ment was fixed by the unregulated water suppq. At present it is pre.cticabl$
"'
to raise only SOlll6 grain and forage crops. althou{'j:l the 8011 and olimate aN
adapted to the growth of m9.!\r ather 'ftl.f1eties. The depeildable water supply
which would be provided by oonstruction or the projeot would fUn11sh proteo-
tion rram drought and permit mOl'e diversified fanning. thus stabll1zing the
agriculturnl industry in this oonmunity.

A ll$W water supply for the Milse. Verde National Perk is urgently needed.
The present BUPPlv. whioh is from a deep well. is nat satisfactory as tbB
water is hot and must be cooled and treated to make it fit for use. The de-
mand for water is constantly illllreasing and the park is becoming each year
more popular. It is now planned to build a pipe line of 1;0 gallons-per-
minute capaoity. with an approximate length of 21. miles to take water from
the Jackson Gulch Reservoir to the national park headquarters. Approximately
120 acre-feet of the reservoir storage will be allocated to the Park Service.
but the construction or the pipe line is not included as a part of the ~laneos
irrigation project.
