The time has come, however, when further large expansion

for agricultural purposes is probably not feasible except through great

federal projects, even though a city the size of Denver might well be

able to continue her water development without such federal projects.

It has become apparent to all that the best protection can be afforded

the Western Slope users and the most economical development can be made

on behalf of industrial, agricultural and urban users on the Eastern)

Slope through the construction of a single well-integrated project

contemplating the protection and development of all affected interests.

Such a project is'the proposed Blue River-$outh Platte development which

is being planned by the United states Bureau of Reclamation. Under the
plan of development by the Bureau of Reclamation, 376,000 acres of fertile

high-grade agricultural land will be supplied with water from the Blue

River-$outh Platte Project of llhich 279 LOOQ, acres are now inadequately
-

supplied from present resources, and 97,000 acres would be entirely new

lands.

It appears from the studies made by the Bureau of Reclamation

and by the Engineers for the City and County of Denver that there are

adequate water resources in the headwaters of the tributaries of the

Colorado River to support a population of two million people in the Denver

Metropolitan Area on a high economic plane, and that thia population may

reasonably be expected to be attained shortly after the end of the present

century if diligent foresight in the present preserves th~atural resources

of the country for the future.

~v~
~

-3-
