These categories are the same as those included in the USBR Colorado River
System Consumptive Uses and Losses Report (USBR, ]99]) produced every five years.

2.0 DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS

The estimation of the non-irrigation consumptive uses and losses from the entire Dolores and San Juan
River basins can be performed either by county (Archuleta, Hinsdale, La Plata, Mineral, Montezuma,
Dolores, Mesa, San Miguel, San Juan and Montrose) or by hydrologic unit (HUC) (14080101,
]4080]02, 14080104, ]4080105, 14080107, ]4080201,]4080202, 14080203, 1403000], ]4030002,
]4030003 and ]4030004). The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) used the intersection of counties and
Hydrologic Units as the subdivisions for the crop consumptive use in its Colorado River System
Consumptive Uses and Losses Report, 1981-/985 (USBR, ]99]), but for some of the other uses (e.g.
thermoelectric, mineral) they used either county or HUC depending on the available data.

To preserve consistency with these published reports and the units of the source data, other use data
are reported in Hydro]ogic Units, County (calculated),or the intersection of County and Hydrologic
Unit. County data are determined based on GIS data showing the percentage of each county
contained in the Dolores and San Juan River Basins.

2.1 Livestock

As in (USBR, 1991) three types of livestock are included: cattle, sheep and hogs. Table 1 shows the
average daily water consumption of each livestock type.

For the years 1985 to the present, the County Agricultural Statistics (CAS) no longer reports the
number of livestock by county, instead it records this information for the entire state of Colorado.
Therefore, the US Census of agriculture was used.

This census is conducted every five years. The census data for 1982,1987, and ]992 were used, these
data can be obtained from the US Census world wide web page at http://sasquatch.kerr.orst.edu/ag-
stateis.html.

Using linear interpolation, values for the years] 985-] 990 were calculated. The calculated numbers for
each county were distributed by sub-basin based on the area (obtained from GIS) of each county
contained in the Dolores and San Juan River Basins (Archuleta 95%, Dolores ]00%, Hinsda]e 27%, La

9

]

12.09-13 IDS/CSU
