<br />. <br /> <br />COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD <br />102 Columbine Building <br />1845 Sherman Street <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />February 18, 1975 <br /> <br />GUNNISON PROJECT <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The city of Gunnison, the county seat of Gunnison County, is <br />situated in west-central Colorado, at and between the confluence of <br />the Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek. The Gunnison area supports a <br />significant livestock industry and a growing year-round outdoor sports, <br />fishing, hunting and mountain recreation activities. The city is the <br />home of Western State College, a state supported institution. <br />Throughout its history the city of Gunnison has experienced a slow <br />but steady growth. The 1970 resident population of the city was 4,613 <br />persons. At the present time, it is estimated that the city has a <br />resident population of approximately 5,100. This resident population <br />is projected to increase to about 6,000 persons by 1980, 8,000 persons <br />by 1995 and 10,000 by the year 2010. A transitory population of college <br />students, tourists and outdoor sports enthusiasts adds to these figures <br /> <br />significantly. <br />The city is supplied with water from seven shallow wells which are <br />located throughout the western portion of the city. The penetrated <br />aquifer has a thickness varying from 20 to 80 feet and is showing signs <br />of reduced productivity. Additional water supplies can be made avail- <br />able from both surface and subsurface sources. Water uses from the <br /> <br />Gunnison municipal system are metered. Daily average per capita uses <br />between 1967 and 1973 range from 200 gallons to 277 gallons. <br /> <br />ooosn <br />
