onn710

C. SPECIAL MANAGEMENT WATERS

L. NATIVE OR UNIQUE AQUATIC WILDLIFE SPECIES IN
WARMWATER BASIC YIELD STREAMS. These waters are managed
to preserve and enhance native aquatic wildlife species,
including fishes, amphibians, mollusks, and crustaceans,
and their habitat. Generally speaking, the populations
of aquatic wildlife in these waters are self-sustaining,
and dependent on the quality of the habitat.

The streams and rivers included in this category
encompass 4,270 acres of water, and includes the mainstem
of the South Platte River from the confluence of the
Cache La poudre River at Greeley downstream to the
Nebraska state line. In addition to the mainstem South
Platte River, the drainage of 13 primary tributaries are
included (Figure 3). In descending orde~ from Greeley
downstream these tributaries are:

Lonetree Creek
Crow Creek
Boxelder Creek
Lost Creek
Bijou Creek
Kiowa Creek
Badger Creek
Beaver Creek
Wildcat Creek
Pawnee Creek
Cedar Creek
cottonwood Creek
Lodgepole Creek

The collective resource of the mainstem river, the 13 primary
tributaries, and all the associated gulches, washes, sloughs,
and ephemeral creeks comprise the physical habitat in which a
diverse assemblage of native and non-native fish populations
exists. In recent years however significant concern has
arisen both inside and outside the agency regarding the
distribution, abundance, and management for native fish
species in the region. primary concern at present focuses on
determining present status of native fish. species, and
determining trends in their distribution and abundance. Early
collections of native fish in this basin were conducted by
Jordan (1891) and Ellis (1914), however these collections were
not comprehensive or inclusive of many streams in the basin.
More recent sampling has been conducted by Li (1968), propst
(1982), Goettl (1982), and-Kehmeier and Van Buren (1990). The
current listing of fishes native to the basin includes 28
species still present and 3 species extirpated. These species
are:

10
