For the past seven years, according to the Division of Commerce and Development's figures, nearly 90 percent of the jobs created by new industries moving to Colorado have been located in the 14 Front Range counties. Simi- larly, new employment opportunities through expansion of existing industries reveals that 90 percent of the indus- trial growth is occurring along the Front Range. Of the 37,832 new jobs reported by the division, 33,919 have been located in the Front Range counties. For a yearly break- down, see Tables I through III. In November of 1969, the Governor directed the Di- vision of Commerce and Development to redirect its activ- ities for industrial promotion to areas outside of the rapidly growing Denver metropolis. The General Assembly also ~qopted the following language during the 1972 Ses- sion:!! 3-18-2. PurDose. It is the purpose of this division to plan and promote the eco- nomic development of the state and particu- larly those rural and lesser populated areas of the state which desire to encourage such development as well as neighborhoods with chronic unemployment; to stimulate the growth and prosperity of commerce, agriculture, in- dustry, labor, and the professions within such areas of the state; to advertise and publicize the state of Colorado; and to co- ordinate the efforts of private and govern- mental agencies engaged in similar activities within the state. 3-18-3.
