003131

Page 30

Reservoir evaporation is applied at the end of each season. The

area/volume relationship for a reservoir is specified at several points. The

evaporation rate is specified in the surface area/volume table for each period.

Surface area is determined by linear interpolation; evaporation is the product

of the area and the seasonal rate. Area/volume relationships and evaporation

rates were adopted from the USBR Colorado River Simulation System (USBR, CRSS,
1982).

3. Representation of Upper Colorado River water use

DWOSYM explicitly estimates the maximum firm yield of Denver's water supply

system while operating the Colorado River mainstem in Colorado on a call basis.

Denver's existing system and various future system configurations can be

modeled. Alternate configurations can include both physical changes in Denver's

system and institutional changes concerning the operation of the river. In

addition, the demands of the Colorado-Big Thompson project and water sales from

Green Mountain reservoir can be specified.

The model utilizes a number of virgin flow data files for several West

Slope river reaches to represent the operation of the Colorado River above

Glenwood Springs. In order to model the effects of increased runoff, a number

of virgin flow files were modified to reflect the flow increases expected from a

representative vegetation manipulation program in the Arapaho National Forest.

Specifically, the virgin flows of the various tributaries of the Fraser"

Williams Fork, and the Colorado River above Kremmling and the Colorado River at

Dotsero were adjusted to reflect increased flows from vegetative manipulation in

the months of April, May, and June (Table III-I). OWDSYM was then used to
determine Denver's system yields under normal and enhanced virgin flows for

Denver's existing system and for future configurations of the system as
