Oil~t,j3 Animas-La Plata Project (Continued) Plan of Develcp~ent The Animas-La Plata project would develop flows at' the Animas and La Plata River systems for irrigation. municlpa1 and industrial Use, recreation, and fish and wildlife conservation. Principal project storage ~~u1d be proyided at the Hovardsville Res- ervoir on the Animas River. Most of the releases from the reservoir and river accretions in the 23 miles or channel helov the reservoir would be diverted into the Animas Diversion Canal and conveyed south- west rOT use in the La Plata Hi ver dra.inage area. The remainder would be used for municipal and industrial purposes at Durango, Colorado, and Aztec and Farmington, N. Mexico. The Durango vater, consisting of releases from the Animas Diversion Canal. and lion of Falls and JW1C- tieD Creeks, would be stored in the potential Aniaas Mountain Reser- voir for release to the city's municipa1 system. Part of the vater would replace that now diverted to Durango tram the Florida RiVer. The replaced \o"8.ter would then be used rOT irr~ion of land under- the recently constructed Florida rec~tion proJect. The water for Aztec and FarI::l.ington would flow in the Animas RiYer past the head of the Animas Diversion Canal to the diversion points of the municipal systems. In the La Plate. River Basin the Animas Diversion Canal liQuld craBS the river and deliver water to the poten"tial. Hay Guleb Reservoir at its terminus. Water liQuld also be released from t~ canal to the potential Red Mesa Canal and to existing lrrigaticn ditches on both sides of the La Plata River. The Cherry Creek Lateral would branch from the Animas Diversion Canal just above the Hay Culch Beservoir9 extend across the top of the Hay Gulch Dam, w::d serve l.ands-too high to be served from the reservoir. At times ~ 'WOuld be released from the Ani.r:!as Diversion Canal into the La Plata. River for downstream use and at other times surplus river flews wouLd be diverted into the canal. Water in Hay Gulch Reservoir would be re1eased into the Dry Side Ca- nal which \o"Quld extend southwest and 1xJKether with its branches-Ute and Ponds Canals--vould provide vater ror presen~ undeveloped lands on bath sides of the low divide.betweem La Plata and ~1ancas Rivers. Some water for municipal and industria1 use would also be delivered through the Dry Side Canal. Natural flays of the La Plata River t~tber with releases to the river from the Animas Diversion Cana1 EDd return ~lovs from project use would be used for irrigation and mccicipal and industrial pur- poses in the southern portion of the project area in Colorado and Nev Mexico. Canals heading at the poteatial Long Hollow Diversion DEU:l wuld divert on both sides af the river.
