<br />Oil~t,j3 <br />Animas-La Plata Project (Continued) <br /> <br />Plan of Develcp~ent <br /> <br />The Animas-La Plata project would develop flows at' the Animas and <br />La Plata River systems for irrigation. municlpa1 and industrial <br />Use, recreation, and fish and wildlife conservation. <br /> <br />Principal project storage ~~u1d be proyided at the Hovardsville Res- <br />ervoir on the Animas River. Most of the releases from the reservoir <br />and river accretions in the 23 miles or channel helov the reservoir <br />would be diverted into the Animas Diversion Canal and conveyed south- <br />west rOT use in the La Plata Hi ver dra.inage area. The remainder would <br />be used for municipal and industrial purposes at Durango, Colorado, <br />and Aztec and Farmington, N. Mexico. The Durango vater, consisting of <br />releases from the Animas Diversion Canal. and lion of Falls and JW1C- <br />tieD Creeks, would be stored in the potential Aniaas Mountain Reser- <br />voir for release to the city's municipa1 system. Part of the vater <br />would replace that now diverted to Durango tram the Florida RiVer. <br />The replaced \o"8.ter would then be used rOT irr~ion of land under- <br />the recently constructed Florida rec~tion proJect. The water for <br />Aztec and FarI::l.ington would flow in the Animas RiYer past the head of <br />the Animas Diversion Canal to the diversion points of the municipal <br />systems. <br /> <br />In the La Plate. River Basin the Animas Diversion Canal liQuld craBS the <br />river and deliver water to the poten"tial. Hay Guleb Reservoir at its <br />terminus. Water liQuld also be released from t~ canal to the potential <br />Red Mesa Canal and to existing lrrigaticn ditches on both sides of <br />the La Plata River. The Cherry Creek Lateral would branch from the <br />Animas Diversion Canal just above the Hay Culch Beservoir9 extend <br />across the top of the Hay Gulch Dam, w::d serve l.ands-too high to be <br />served from the reservoir. At times ~ 'WOuld be released from the <br />Ani.r:!as Diversion Canal into the La Plata. River for downstream use and <br />at other times surplus river flews wouLd be diverted into the canal. <br /> <br />Water in Hay Gulch Reservoir would be re1eased into the Dry Side Ca- <br />nal which \o"Quld extend southwest and 1xJKether with its branches-Ute <br />and Ponds Canals--vould provide vater ror presen~ undeveloped lands <br />on bath sides of the low divide.betweem La Plata and ~1ancas Rivers. <br />Some water for municipal and industria1 use would also be delivered <br />through the Dry Side Canal. <br /> <br />Natural flays of the La Plata River t~tber with releases to the <br />river from the Animas Diversion Cana1 EDd return ~lovs from project <br />use would be used for irrigation and mccicipal and industrial pur- <br />poses in the southern portion of the project area in Colorado and <br />Nev Mexico.
