Muoh of the Rio Grande frqm South Fork upstream to
the Wagon Wheel Gap Reservoir headwaters is well
shaded and lined with alder brush and oonifers,
as twPified by this area tmmediate1y above the
reservoir site. Suoh river mileage is attraotive
and aooessib1e to fishennen and the stream borders
support an abundanoe of game forage . . . . . . . . . 48

PLATE IV. Innnediately above Wagon Wheel Gap, only the right
bank of the Rio Grande is open to publio fishing
(left in photograph); the left bank is posted
against trespass. These August flows were
below average but are nevertheless indioative
of why the lower reaohes of the river wi thin the
projeot area are fished mostly during the winter .. 50

Bellows Creek flows have been partly diverted into
four man~ade trout ponds to provide sport fishing
and to supplement a stream-improvement program on
the stream itself. Waterfowl use this area
heavily and both the streamsides and slopes pro-
vide valuable bi g-game winter range. Only the
lower slopes shown will be inundated . . . . . . . . 51

PLATE VII. As evident at more upstream Rio Grande 'Reservoir,
appreoiab1e sedimentation and a braided stream
ohanne1 are expeoted for Wagon Wheel Gap Reservoir.
A1 though some utilization is expeoted during low
wa tar levels and volunteer vegetation will oon-
tribute to reservoir fertility upon reinundation,
f1uotuations will be extremely detrimental to
beaver and other fur-anima1 habitat. . . . . . . . . 52

',.

vi

1189
