,~

;ae se rvoir Fi.shery
41. The reservoir fishery will no"!; be as productive to the
fisherman's creel as the stream fishery it will replace. For purposes
of comparison records for Vallecito and Green Mountain Reservoirs on
Los Pinos and the Blue ~i ver, respectively. in Colorado shaw oa"!;ches
of 0.25 trout per hour. Moreover, as the reservoir approaches lower

levels and its lake oonditions disappear, utilization is expected

to decrease appreciably even though the rate of catch might remain

abou"!; the same. Wagon Wheel Gap Reservoir will have an estimated

utilization of 5,000 fisherman days annually.

Need for f'i shing opportuni ties

42. Most trout fishermen prefer to fish streams although a

minority may fish reservoirs by choice. The project will provide

an additional opportuni ty for the latter fi she men. On the other

hand, inundation of streams by the reservoir and severe reduction of

trout habi ta t for 77 miles below the dam si te will mrpair or remove

a similar opportuni ty for a larger nUll1ber of fisheI1J1en who prefer

stream fishing.

u. S. Fi sh Cul tural Station

43. Wagon Wheel Ga.pReservoir will inundate the fish hatchery

which is essential for stocking trout waters on public lands.

Related Monetary Values

44. Expenditures associated with the fishery of the Rio Grande
are an important asset to the local economy. Recreation, of which
fishing is a major component, is either the only or an important source
of income for many persons and business establishments.
