The <br /> <br /> <br />State of Colorado va.lUl s the ]lio Grande as one of its best trout <br /> <br /> <br />streams and one that is heavily fished by both residents and non- <br /> <br /> <br />residents. The latter patronage is largely due to the proximity <br /> <br /> <br />of the stream to population centers in Texas. Oklahoma. and other <br /> <br /> <br />plains states where trout fishing is almost nonexistent. <br /> <br /> <br />U. S. Fish Cultural Station <br /> <br /> <br />28. The U. S, Fish Cultural Station. a faoility of the Fish <br /> <br /> <br />and Wildlife Servioe. looated a short distanoe belaw the confluenoe <br /> <br /> <br />of Willow Creek and the Rio Grande. has for many years helped to meet <br /> <br /> <br />the ever-inoreasing demands for stooking trout waters on publio lands. <br /> <br /> <br />Wi th the Projeot <br /> <br /> <br />Charaoter of the streams <br /> <br /> <br />Within the Reservoir Site <br /> <br /> <br />29. All streams within Wagon Wheel Gap Reservoir site will be <br /> <br /> <br />affeoted, Three miles of the Rio Grande and a total of 4 miles of <br /> <br /> <br />Bellows. Sunnyside. Shallow. Farmers. and Deep Creeks between the <br /> <br /> <br />top of the flood control pool and average annual maximum pool will <br /> <br /> <br />be replaoed by a reservoir fishery about one-third of the time. Be- <br /> <br /> <br />tween the average annual maximum and average annual minimum pools <br /> <br /> <br />about 5 miles of the river and 2 miles of Bellows and Farmers Creeks <br /> <br /> <br />will be low-quali ty stream fisheries 30 peroent of the time. The A. <br /> <br /> <br />miles of the Rio Grande and.J..miles of tributaries wi thin the average <br /> <br /> <br />annual minimum pool will be inundated most of the time and will oease <br /> <br /> <br />to exist as stream fisheries. <br /> <br />Dam Site to Goose Creek <br /> <br />1175 <br /> <br />3D.
