<br /> <br />f <br /> <br />Climate <br />16. Weather reoords, varying from 21 to 63 years at '"agon <br />Wheel GaP. Del Norte, and Center, indioate maximum reoorded temperatures <br />of 89, 91. and 92 degrees F. and minimum temperatures of -41. -26, and <br />-36 degrees respeotively. Average sunnner temperatures are 54.2, 61.6, <br />and 62.5 degrees, and average winter temperatures are 14.2, 21.1, and <br /> <br /> <br />17.1 degrees at the same three stations. The average frost-free period <br /> <br /> <br />is 90 days (June 13 to September 12), 120 days (May 25 to September 23), <br /> <br /> <br />and 95 days (June 8 to September 13), respeotively. Preoipitation varies <br /> <br /> <br />with altitude and looation. At Wagon Wheel Gap. elevation 8,500, the <br /> <br /> <br />maximum annual preoipita.tion is 24.66 inches and the average is 13.50 <br /> <br /> <br />inches; at Del Norte, elevation 7,880, the maximum is 13.25 inohes and <br /> <br /> <br />the average is 8.38 inches; and at Center, elevation 7,666, the maximum <br /> <br /> <br />is 10.03 inches and the average is 6.93 inches. A oonsiderable amount <br /> <br /> <br />of precipitation falls as snow at Wagon Wheel Gap. The prevailing wind <br /> <br /> <br />is from the southwest. <br /> <br />Vegetation <br />17. Vegetation varies widely on the project area, depending upon <br />site and land use. The Rio Grande Division is in the Canadian and <br />Transi tion Life Zones. The higher slopes are a mixture of grassy parks <br />and stands of Engelmann spruoe. The lower slopes are covered with <br /> <br />spruoe. Douglas fir. ponderosa pine, aspen. or grass. depending upon <br /> <br />exposure. Within Wagon Wheel Gap Reservoir site the slopes are princi- <br />pally grasslands with a few small areas in crops. Below South Fork <br />the valley widens and most of the land is in crops: barley, potatoes, <br />alfalfa, oats, and some vegetables. Low-lying areas are in native <br /> <br />8 <br /> <br />1180 <br /> <br />
