<br />Section 1: Introduction <br /> <br />The South Plane River basin. v.ith a drainage area of about 62,400 km2 (24,300 mil) is one oftbe <br />main tributaries of the Missouri River. Figure II, The South Platte basin is divided into tv.'o <br />regions: the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains. The western portion of the basin comprises <br />the eastern slope of the Rockies. The eastern portion, on the plains, consists of railing hills and <br />valleys. Since the 1990 census. <br />Colorado bas grov.n at an average of almost 2.5 percent annually. The 1992-1993 grov.th rate of <br />2.9 percent was the third highest in the nation (Colorado, 1996). Agriculture accoWlts for about <br />37 percent of the land use in the South Platte River Basin. v.ith about 1.4 million acres ofland <br />irrigated by the South Platte in Colorado. <br /> <br />According to the USGS, the estimated total off-stream water divened from the South Platte River <br />Basin in 1990 was 3.900 Mgal/d (12,000 acre-feet per day or 4.4 million acre-feet per year). Of <br />this amount. 71 percent is surface water and 29 percent is ground\\1Uer. The principal uses were <br />irrigation (70.8 percent), power generation (14.6 percent), and domestic use (8.4 percent).
