.

OJ2155

PHYSICAL FEATURES

The study area is in western Moffat County, Colorado, eastern

Dagget County, Utah, and northeastern UintahCounty, Utah. The segment

of the Green River under consideration extends from Flaming Gorge Dam

through both Browns Park and Dinosaur National Monument.

The Green' and San Juan Rivers are the two main tributaries of the

Colorado River. Headwaters of the Green are in west-central Wyoming on

the western slope of the Wind River Range, north of Pinedale, and about

175 miles (282 kID) north of the Flaming Gorge Dam.

Drainage basin of the Green River contains 48,660 sq. mi. (126,029

sq. km) in Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.3 Largest tributary of the Green

is the Yampa River.

Maximum elevations in the Western Uinta Mountains exceed 13,000 ft

(3,923 m); however, the study area is in the eastern Uintas where the

,prominent Zenobia Peak reaches an elevation of 9,006 ft (2,745 m). '

Minimum elevation of about 4,740 ft (1,445 m) is at the southwestern

edge of the Monument on the Green River.

Physiographically, the river corridor study area is in the southeastern

segment of the Middle Rocky Mountain province that is composed essentially

of the east-trending Uinta Mountains. Cirque basins and steep valleys

drain into the Wyoming Basin on the north and into the Uinta Basin on

the south. Elevation of the basins is about 5,000 ft (1,524 m); thus

maximum relief is about 8,000 ft (2,438 m).

o

3Upper Colorado Region Comprehensive Framework Study.

Main Report.

June 1971, p. 5.

3

\

,
I,
I,

"

i

I
