To change a password, such a user must contact the UNIX system adminis-
trator.

By default, a new user is a read-only user. If the user is to have permissions to modify data
maintained by SPWRMS, these permissions must be added (please see Section 1.4.
"Informix User Authorization," on page 5).

1.4 Informix User Authorization

A new user, with either a standard UNIX or a PC user account, is automatically a read-only
user to SPWRMS. If a user is to have write permissions to some portion of the information
maintained by SPWRMS, two types of permissions must be granted: I) Informix
table-level privileges which allow the user to insert into, update, and delete from tables in
the database, and 2) application privileges specifying which data the user is allowed to
change.

Read Only

Since all users are able to access SPWRMS on a read-only basis, the SPWRMS database
allows only public read access. The SPWRMS application checks application-level permis-
sions only for operations which modify the contents of the database.

Write Permissions- Informix Database

Users who are able to modify data in the SPWMS database require table-level permissions
on several tables in lhe SPWRMS database. These permissions allow users to insert into,
update. and delete from tables in the SPWRMS database. Since Informix does not support
the concept of groups in its permission scheme, these permissions must be granted for each
writable user.

To grant the appropriate table-level privileges to a writable user, run the script:

$SPLATIEltools/db_permissions/create_grancscript_for _ wri teable_users (followed by
the name of the new user).

This script will generate an SQL script, run by the database administrator using Informix
front-end tools, with the appropriate grant statements. The new user now has the appro-
priate table-level database permissions.

Write Permissions-SPWRMS Application

Another requirement for granting write permissions to a user is to provide the application
with information about which types of information the user is allowed to modify. A user
with database write permissions will still not be able to update SPWRMS data until appli-
cation-level permissions are granted-the application restricts the modification of any data.

Administrator's Manual

5
