No evidence of the
biological concentration of silver iodide through food
chains has been found. When soil was sprinkled with
water dosed with silver iodide in concentrations from
one to several million times greater than that in
seeded rain, retention of most of the silver in the
upper 2 cm of the soil was observed. However, it is
not known whether the same would be true at the much
lower concentrations xharacteristic of seeded rain.' [4,
p. 8-3]

"Appendix 8 of the programmatic Statement discussed natural.
or background levels of silver in the environment and
environmental dispersion of silver by human activity. Many
field and laboratory studies of silver have been sponsored
by Project Skywater. These studies are discussed in the
programmatic Statement. They include:

"Field monitoring of silver concentration in precipita-
tion surface waters, and vegetation in order to estab-
lish baseline values and investigate possible evidence
of accumulations due to cloud seeding.

"Laboratory i nvesti gat i on of the effect of sil ver iodi de
on certain strains of bacteria in order to establish the
nature of these effects and the thresholds of silver
concentration at which they become perceptible.

"Laboratory invest i gat i on of the effect of silver i odi de
on fish in order to establish the nature of these
effects and the thresholds of silver concentration at
which they become perceptible.

"Laboratory invest i gat i on of the effect of sil ver i odi de
on digestive processes of two classes of animals that
feed on vegetation possibly subject to contamination by
silver iodide in order to discover possible effects of
silver iodide on the microflora involved in the diges-
tive process.

"Laboratory and field investigation of the effects of
silver compounds on test plots of vegetation and soil in
order to discover any possible effects of silver iodide
or other silver compounds on biological processes within
these plots.

"Laboratory and field investigation of the effects of
silver iodide on vegetation in the immediate vicinity of
the site of silver iodide smoke generators that had been
operated for substantial periods in the past, in order
to assess possible changes in biological processes

27

---..,::,~ -----~~~- - ~~--~~~~-----------~~~-
