--,-'

0035)6

ENVIRONMENT

The project would improve the environment by providing clean high
quality culinary water and assist in the controlled development of
the valley. Ranchers abilities to improve their social well-being
and economic status would also be enhanced.

Most construction scars would be of short term duration as the pipe-
line systems would be buried and the disturbed areas reshaped to con-
form with its natural surroundings and revegetated with trees, grasses,
and shrubery typical of that vegetative zone. This is particularly
important along the pipeline along the Fryingpan River between Ruedi
Reservoir and the Town of Basalt.

Only minimal big-game native habitat would be disturbed by the proj-
ect since the lands to be irrigated are privately owned and most of
it is presently farmed. Crossings .ould be installed along the open
canals for big-game and domestic animals, Spoil banks along the
canal would be reseeded to selected grass species,

Construction contracts would include measures to protect the streams
from pollution and to limit construction activities to essential areas
only.

PROJECT FEATURES

Ruedi Reservoir (100,000 ac.-ft. total capaCity)
Basalt Project estimated use from Ruedi Reservoir (ac,-ft.) 40,000

Landis Pipeline and Canal System (miles)

68

MUNICIPAL AND DOMESTIC 'vATER

Service area
Aspen area
Town of Basal t
Town of Carbondale
Valley between Basalt and Carbondale
Missouri Heights
College area
Total

Acre-feet
8,000
3,600
3,600
4,600
3,600
1,200
24,600

PROJECT LANDS (acres)

Full
service
2,860

Supplemental
service
4,660

Total
7,520

2
