Ba~kground <br /> <br />Since 1975 the Heritage Conservation e.nd' Recreation Service--formerly <br />the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation--has been involved in a systematic <br />nationwide inventory and evaluation of rivers. This handout briefly <br />describes the study, explains how it is being conducted and also high- <br />lights some of the usefulness of the study information, especially in <br />relation to State river programs. <br /> <br />Where did the Nationwide Rivers Inventor <br /> <br /> <br />Section 5(d) of Public Law 90-542 authorizes the Department's of Interior <br />and Agriculture to make studies to determine which potential wild, scenic <br />and recreation rivers shall be evaluated by Federal agencies as-potential <br />alternative uses of water and land resources, <br /> <br />What is the purpose of the rivers inventory? <br /> <br />The major purposes of the Inventory are: <br /> <br />To identify and evaluate significant recreation, scenic, and wild <br />river segments of the Nation. <br /> <br />To detennine the suitabil ity of rivers for further study and/or <br />potential inclusion in the National Rivers System. <br /> <br />- To identify for the President, Congress and the Office of <br />~1anagement and Budget the parameters of a basic National Hild, <br />Scenic, and Recreation Rivers System including those rivers segments <br />which might appropriately be protected by other levels of gov~rnment, <br /> <br />What is the objective of the Hild and Scenic Rivers System Study? <br />The objective of the System Study is to identify and 'prioritize rivers <br />which are: <br /> <br />- 5 miles or more in length <br /> <br />- in an undeveloped or natural condition <br /> <br />- possess outstandingly remarkable values ir.cluding recreation and <br />cultura 1 <br /> <br />- in need of some conservation or preservation measures <br /> <br />Who is conductinq the Rivers System Study? <br /> <br />Each of the regional offices of HCRS, in cooperation with other Federal, <br />State, and regional agencies and the private sector, is conducting the study. <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />
