<br />002398 <br /> <br />FACT SHEET <br /> <br />DESIGNATION OF PORTIONS OF THE CACHE LA POUDRE RIVER, <br />COLORADO, IN THE NATIONAL WILD & SCENIC RIVER SYSTEM <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />The Cache la poudre River, a unique, scenic river, is <br />located in north-central Colorado. It begins at the continental <br />divide at poudre Lake which is located in Rocky Mountain <br />National Park. <br /> <br />The river flows generally in an easterly direction through <br />Roosevelt National Forest, the cities of LaPorte, Fort Collins, <br />and Greeley, Colorado, before joining the South Platte River. <br /> <br />The U.S. Forest Service has studied 83 miles of the upper <br />reaches of the river for inclusion in the national wild and <br />scenic river system and recommended 62 miles for designation. <br /> <br />LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL <br /> <br />Does not affect the use and management of existing water <br />development in the poudre River Basin. <br /> <br />Designates 31 miles of the Cache la poudre as "wild" <br />and designates 44 miles as "recreational." <br /> <br />Names the upper 18 miles of the'river the "Peter H. Dominick <br />wild River Area." <br /> <br />Preserves the current jurisdiction of water rights under <br />existing state law. <br /> <br />The Wild River areas are: <br /> <br />Beginning at poudre Lake downstream to the confluence <br />of Joe Wright Creek, 18 miles. <br /> <br />South Fork Cache la poudre River from its source to the <br />Commanche Peak Wilderness Boundary, 4 miles. <br /> <br />South Fork of the Cache la poudre River from its <br />intersection with the easterly section line of <br />Sec.30 Township 8 North, Range 72 West, to the <br />confluence of the main stem of the Cache la poudre <br />River. <br /> <br />(MORE) <br />
