2356

much as 8,000 mg/l. This belt extends from a few miles south of
Bouse Wash southerly to Tyson Wash.
Salinity as measured in the deep zone by four wells ranged from
650 mg/L to 1,910 mg/L. The quality is variable and the water
quality in the deep zone as delineated by the Geolgical Survey is
variable and measured from 650 to 1,920 mg/L at the four well sites.
The salinity is slightly higher than in the principal zone and much
like the upper zone.
Well water samples having a TDS of over 4,000 mg/L have a
combined sodium and chloride ion content of from 50 to 60 percent, in
contrast to Colorado River water, which has approximately 28 per-
cent. Such a composition is attributed to the alteration of Colorado
River water through concentration by evaporation of ponded surface
water and evapotranspiration, precipitation of insoluble calcium and
magnesium carbonates, and reduction of sulfate.
