In 1976 approximately 70,917 acres of flood
plain land and 1,460 acres of mesa land were irrigated.
The Tribes have recently notified the Secretary that the
Reservation contains more irrigable land than the amount cited in the
Decree, and have petitioned that additional land be certified for
agriculture and that the water entitlement be increased accordingly.
Water for irrigation of the flood plain in Arizona is diverted from
the river at Headgate Rock Dam, and conveyed to the irrigated area
by a main canal with a capacity up to 3,365 ft3/s. Water is dis-
tributed by a branching system of laterals and sublaterals ranging in
capacity from 10 ft3/s to 688 ft3/s. There are approximately 81 miles
of concrete-lined canals and laterals, and approximately 151 miles
unlined. The system operates by gravity flow, except for low pump
lifts in several laterals serving slightly higher land in the north-
eastern part of the project.
Mesa land is irrigated with well water at the present time, and it
is not known how much of the well water, if any, is underflow from
the Colorado River. It is assumed for the purpose of this report that
the mesa will be supplied with Colorado River water in the future,
either directly by river diversion or indirectly by subsurface flow
from the river into the aquifer beneath the mesa, in response to
water table draw down .
In general, there is adequate capacity in the conveyance system
to serve the flood plain lands presently irrigated and, with some
extensions, the lands planned for development in the future. How-
ever, some unlined reaches of canal and lateral are in need of rehabil-
itation because they have deteriorated and are troublesome to operate
and maintain at design capacity.

7
