2348

for improved irrigation efficiency will apparently be achieved on the
Reservation without a Federal salinity control project. Con,sequently,
further investigation of the Colorado River Indian Reservation Unit is
not justified at this time.
Specific conclusions regarding further study of the Colorado
River Indian Reservation Unit are as follows:
1. The Colorado River Indian Reservation Unit should be
deferred from further consideration under the Colorado
River Water Quality Improvement Program at this time.
2. The Intensive Salinity Surveillance Program should continue
to monitor the Reservation's salt inflow and outflow.
Cooperation and Acknowledgments
This investigation was entered into as a cooperative venture with
the U. S. Soil Conservation Service, as established by a Memorandum
of Understanding between the Service and the Bureau of Reclamation
pursuant to Public Law 93-320. The State office of the Soil
Conservation Service in Phoenix, Arizona, and the Western Technical
Services Center at Portland, Oregon participated by drawing up plans
for investigating onfarm management practices, and providing consul-
tation on aspects of irrigation water management.
The U. S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, Colorado River Agency
provided information on irrigation operations and water quality, and
provided valuable insights into the operation of the water distribution
systems.
The services of Boyle Engineering Corporation. Phoenix. Arizona
were used to compile information on irrigation and drainage, to esti-
mate efficiencies, and to make preliminary analyses of the effective-
ness of water system improvements to reduce salt discharge to the
river.
Personnel of the U . S. Salinity Laboratory at Riverside.
California advised on soil chemistry and salt balance relationships.
The U. S. Geological Survey has previously made studies of the
geohydrology of the Colorado River Valley, and those studies pro-
vided the foundation for much of the analysis in this report.

4
