<br />002567 <br /> <br />UNIVERSITY WATER NEWS <br /> <br />KIRVIN KNOX APPOINTED TO HEAD CSU'S <br />AGRICULTURE AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS <br /> <br />Kirvin Knox has been named Colorado State's Associate <br />Academic Vice President for Agriculture and Outreach <br />Programs and Dean of the College of Agriculture, President <br />Alben Yates armounced the appoinunent in November, Knox, <br />who will asswne his new duties in February. will be the <br />principal spokesman for the broadly dermed area of <br />agriculture, This includes intercollege, Cooperative Extension <br />and Agricultura1 Experiment Station programs. and programs <br />specific to the College of Agricultural Sciences, Both urban <br />and rural programs are included, <br /> <br />Knox was a professor in the Department of Animal Sciences <br />and Director of the Metabolic Research Laboratory at Colorado <br />State from 1964-72, He also served as visiting scientist with <br />the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland; an <br />NIH Pre-doctoral Fellow; and member of the Davis Tracer <br />Team for Metabolic Research, <br /> <br />Knox now is Professor of Nutritional Sciences and Dean and <br />Director of the College of Agriculture and Natura1 Resources <br />at the University of Connecticut, He also serves as director of <br />the Storrs Agricultural Experiment Station and Director of the <br />Cooperative Extension System there, He received a bachelor's <br />degree in agriculture from California State University-Fresno. <br />a master's in nutrition from Colorado State and a doctorate in <br />nutrition from the University of California-Davis, <br /> <br />Source: CSU Comment 11121/91 <br /> <br />JAMES HEANEY NAMED <br />DEPARTMENT CHAIR AT CU <br /> <br />James Patrick Heaney. fonner Director of the Horida Water <br />Resources Research Center, was recently named Chairman of <br />the Depanment of Civil. Environmental and Architectural <br />Engineering at the University of Colorado. Boulder. Heaney, <br />born in Chicago, lllinois. received his BSCE from the lllinois <br />Institute of Technology (sttuctura1 engineering) and his MSCE <br />and Ph,D from Nonhwestern University (environmental <br />engineering and water resources engineering and operations <br />research), <br /> <br />After receiving his degree, Heaney worked for the <br />Metropolitan Sanitary District of Chicago, the U,S, Public <br />Health Service on the Colorado River Basin Project, as a <br />consultant for the American Public Works Association, and as <br />a senior research engineer for Battelle-Nonhwest, Richland, <br />Washington, In 1968 he moved to Florida, accepting a joint <br />appoinunent at the University of Horida, Gainesville in <br />Industrial and Systems Engineering and Civil Engineering, <br />Heaney became director of the Florida Water Resources <br /> <br />9 <br /> <br />Research Center in 1979, He is a registered Professional <br />Engineer in Florida, and is a member of nwnerous professional <br />societies, He has been associate editor of the Water Resources <br />Bulletin since \990. He served on the Water Resources <br />Committee for the National Association of Universities and <br />Land Grant Colleges for two years (1984-86), was President of <br />the Executive Board, Universities Council on Water Resources <br />(1983-84), and is currently a member of the Water Science and <br />Technology Board, Panel on Sources, Wastewater Management <br />in Coastal Areas, <br /> <br />Heaney's consulting activities since 1980 have included the <br />Environmental ProteCtion Agency, the Office of Technology <br />Assessment, the National Science Foundation, the Pecos River <br />Commission, the National Oceanic and Aunospheric <br />Administration. and the South Horida Water Management <br />District, In \988 he participated in the development of a water <br />plan for the State of Sao Paulo. Brazil and in 1989 was <br />consultant to the University of Tunis on urban water resources, <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF WATER QUALITY <br />DATA MANAGEMENT SURVEY NOW AVAILABLE <br /> <br />The Summary of 1991 Water Quality Data M anagemenl Survey <br />is currently available to interested agencies or individnals <br />through the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute, The <br />repon contains a brief sununary of survey responses from 200 <br />agencies that collect, use. or manage water quality data, The <br />two-page questionnaire solicited responses on data management <br />systems. water quality activities, types of data used, sources of <br />data, and interagency activities, The repon presents nwnerical <br />results of the swvey, with minimal interpretation of results, <br />Interpretation and elaboration of the results will be included in <br />the master's thesis of the swvey preparer, Laurel Saito. a <br />graduate student at Colorado State University, This thesis <br />should be completed in the spring of 1992. and also will be <br />available on request. <br /> <br />CSU STUDENT AWARDED USCOLD FELLOWSHIP <br /> <br />Debby Miller bas received a $10.000 graduate research <br />fellowship from the United States Committee on Large Dams <br />(USCOLD), Debby. an insttuClor in the Civil Engineering <br />Department, is working on her PhD, With her fellowship <br />funds Debby will continue her basic studies related to the <br />mechanics of unsaturated soils and their effect on dam <br />performance, Debby's advisor is John Nelson. Professor of <br />Civil Engineering, <br /> <br />Larry Stephens, representing USCOLD, presented Debby with <br />a scholarship check at an October 22 award ceremony in <br />CSU's University Club, The U,S, Committee on Large Dams <br />is a nationwitle professional organization dedicated to <br />advancing the technology of darn design. construction. <br />
