ANNUAL REPORT
FISCAL YEAR 1939
July 1, 1939 to June 30,1939.
Camp #53

.

For the fiscal year 1939 the work of this camp has had to do largely
with the permanent betterment of the irrigation system on the North Platte
Project, under the supervision of the Mane.ger of the Pathfinder Irrigation
District.' Some four miles of the Interstate Canal banks were rebuilt and
riprapped, 46,371 Square yards of rip rap being placed, During the summer
and fall of 1938 and again in April, May and June of 1939 the main work
projects have been the lining of lateral ditches with re-enforced concrete,
Some of the heavier excavation required was done by the dragline which moved
5581 cubic yards. while 12,377 cubic yards were excavated entirely by hand,
Eighty three water control structures were built, 10Z69 square yards of con-
crete lining was placed which consists of a three inch slab reinforced with
3/8" deformed steel rods, All concrete work has been well finished and com-
pares favorably with the very best work done by contract. Its value as
vocational training for the enrollees is beynd computation,

.'

The Rodent Control program in charge of Foreman L. M. Stone covered
24,313 acres with poison baits the first time over, then made a clean up of
the same ground by trapping, This latter effort produced 316 pocket gophers,
the forefeet of which were brought into camp and are preserved in formalin.
Incidentally this crew also killed 161 rattle snakes and poisoned 432 kangaroo
rats, The 10 men crew used 1491 pomnds of poisoned whe~t bait during that
part of the year when the destructive pocket gopher is active,

"

An inverted syphon 640 feet long was lai~, being constructed of pre-
cast concrete pipe, 36 inches in diemeter, each three feet section weighing
1500 pounds, It was necessary to band the joints in this pipe line with bands
of concr~te as the same is under considel'o.ble pressure, As our stock of 36"
pipe ran out, we cast 44 of these tile to complete the job, A two-ton hoist
was borrowed from Camp Br-!l3, Veteran, Wyoming to expedite the laying of this
pipe line an average of 7 feet under ground,

During April and May 62,947 trees were :olanted :m v rious farm property
lines in cooperation with the forest service, Much of the tree stock however
was raised in our own nursery. During June approxim~tely 130,000 trees, too
small for farm planting this year, have been planted in the nursery. The
nursery is irrigc'.ted by our own dam and lateral system, and r.lany of the r.lan
days assigned to the nursery are needed to iilaintain this part of the project,

Using only about 300 mandays, the surveying crew has been very busy
throughout the year, running ~rofiles, setting grades for lateral lining, for
water control structures, etc,

i' repair garage buil<oing 32' x 40' with a parts room and he:cting ,)lant
constructed, Most of the lumber in this structure c.onsists af salvaged
materials from Camp BR-l, formerly located at Gering, Nebraska, 2710 cubic
yards of crushed rock and 5000 cubic yards of sand were )repared by the SCreen_
ing plant. They ar~ used as agereeates fJr concrete,
