Salinity <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />10.1 General <br /> <br />Salinity is the only water quality parameter modeled by <br />the CRSS. Salinity is modeled as total dissolved solids; <br />precipitation and ion exchange are not modeled. Salinity <br />is computed by the CRSM at each point in the system as <br />concentration in the river, in units of mg/L. (The CRSS <br />assumes mg/L and parts per million are equivalent.) The <br />concentration in the river can increase, decrease, or re- <br />main constant at each point depending on whether salt is <br />being added or removed, whether water is being added or <br />removed, and on the concentration of the inflow or diver- <br />sion. <br /> <br />78 <br /> <br />* <br />. <br />. <br />,. <br />. <br />I <br />. <br />I <br />t <br />I <br />. <br />) <br />. <br />. <br />. <br /> <br />The salt loads from natural point or natural diffuse <br />sources of salinity are included in the natural salt val- <br />ues in the hydrology input data. These salt loads, there- <br />fore, enter the system at CRSS inflow points. <br /> <br />10.2 Concentration in the River <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The concentration in the river at an inflow point in- <br />creases if the concentration of the inflow is greater than <br />the concentration in the river. The concentration in the <br />river decreases if the concentration of the inflow is <br />less than the concentration in the river. The concentra- <br />tion of the inflow is computed from the natural salt load <br />in the hydrology input data file. <br /> <br />The concentration in the river at a diversion point nor- <br />mally does not change. With ~~e exception of special ex- <br />ports, diversions are made at the same concentration as <br />the concentration in the river, which, therefore, does not <br />change the concentration in the river. A special export <br />diverts water at the concentration specified in the de- <br />mand data input file. This allows special exports to di- <br />vert water at a concentration that is different than the <br />concentration in the river, if the export is actually di- <br />verted farther upstream than the CRSM models. The concen- <br />tration in the river increases if the concentration of the <br />special export is less than the concentration in the <br />river. <br /> <br />The concentration in the river at a return flow point in- <br />creases if the concentration of the return flow is greater <br />than the concentration in the river. The concentration in <br />the river decreases if the concentration of th~ return <br />flow is less than the concentration in the river. The <br />concentration of the return flow is firstly dependent on <br />the amount of diversion that is depleted. All salt that <br />is diverted from the river is returned in the return flow, <br /> <br />. <br />
