,

,

.

.

,

Task 5:

Site Evaluation/Screening

Objective:

To perform a more detailed evaluation of the remaining sites and study areas in
order to select no more than three sites for final evaluation.

Responsibility:

All team members will contribute to this task.

Methodology:

I. Using the criteria established as a part of Tasks 3 and 4, evaluate the remaining
sites at a greater level of detail. This will be done using the matrix approach of
Task 4, supplemented with more extensive descriptions of each factor and site.

2, Visit each of the sites to confirm and supplement information gathered from
map and literature sources.

3, More detailed consideration of siting factors at this stage will include
investigation of:

a. Proximity to suitable habitat and previously identified populations of
endangered species.

b. More specific application of the site-related biological and engineering
criteria of Task 3.

c. A vailability of housing, schools, and other community services within a
reasonable distance.

d, Proximity, degree of difficulty, and cost of obtaining utility services,
particularly electric power. The study will also consider telephone, gas,
potable water and sewage.

e. Hatchery effluent treatment and disposal requirements.

f. Availability, ownership, and cost of required land for hatchery site.
(Land area and configuration requirements will be determined in Task
3.) Site accessibility, including all-weather access, will also be
considered.

g. Degree of difficulty and cost of construction, particularly as related to
soils and foundations, availability of suitable materials, and
transportation of equipment and materials to the site.

h. Operation and maintenance costs will consider pumping requirements;
heating requirements for facilities, the use of solar insolation, staffing,
and other cost items, primarily from the standpoint of differences
between sites.

1. Site geologic suitability will include consideration of landslide potential
at the sites and along the access road(s), foundations, and construction
materials.

10
