It is Dwned and Dperated by the Beaver'ReservDir CDmpany
(BRC) which is held in turn by the MinnesDta Canal and ReservDir CDmpany, the
Turner Ditch CDmpany, and the Lone Cabin Ditch and ReservDir CDmpany. The
reservDir is used to. stDre and regulate release Df water fDr irrigatiDn Df abDut 3,400 acres
Df agricultural land in the PaDnia area.

The reservDir is impDunded by a zDned _e~rthfill emliimkment cDnstructed across a
narrow, steep-walled stretch Df the East-FDrk DL~innesDta Creek. The embankment
is ShDwn in plan and sectiDn Dn Figure 1-2, Dbtained from the design drawing files Df the
CDIDradD DivisiDn Df WatecResDurces (DWR). The embankment is 113 feet high at
the maximum sectiDn arid.870 feet lDng. ReservDir stDrage capacity is 1,600 acre-feet.
A steel Dutlet pipe with' cDncrete, iniet"at the mid-valley sectiDn is used fDr cDntrolled
releases from the reservDir. UncDntrolled releases DCCur through the Dpen channel
spillway in the right abl!unent.
, / ---, '"
. '
Since cDnstruction,Beaver ReservDir has had a histDry Df sinkhDle develDpment in the
reservDir floDr near the embankment. SinkhDle repairs, cDnsisting primarily Df
backfilling and capping with clay, have often been effective in the shDrt-term, but have
nDt prevenfed the develDpment Df new sinkhDles and the eventual appearance Df DId
sinkhDles. In response to' the mDSt recent round Df Dbserved sinkhDle activity in 1992,
the dam has been placed Dn restricted stDrage by the DWR, Office Df the State
Engineer. This repDrt evaluates remedial alternatives and presents a preliminary
remedial design fDr the preferred alternative which addresses the dam safety issues
raised by the Office Df the State Engineer. The repDrt also. includes a cDnstructiDn CDst
estimate and a financial program for the repair work.

23067/Rl.l 09-03.93(9:34am)/RPT

1-1
