Availability of water will also determine
whether it is a direct flow right or a storage right.

2.

Drainageway Names.

Because of transfers of flow from one basin to another,
and due to changes in topographic maps over the years,
the early water decrees used different names to refer to
the drainageway which is now referred to as Gurley
Canyon and Gurley Ditch. To avoid confusion, a brief
discussion of names is necessary. The upper drainageway
now used to carry water from Gurley Reservoir to
downstream irrigators (the upper Gurley Ditch) is a
deep, narrow canyon known as Gurley Canyon. Prior to
development of irrigation in the Norwood area, the
stream in this canyon was actually the upper end of
Maverick Draw, which is a major stream which drains the
area to the east and south of Norwood. When the Gurley
irrigation system was built, the flow out of Gurley
canyon was diverted away from the lower Maverick Draw
drainage at a point a couple miles below Gurley Canyon.
The lower artificial ditch and the upper natural
drainage (below the dam) comprise what is referred to as
the "lower Gurley Ditch".

The court order and decree providing the Town of Norwood
with rights to divert on the Gurley Ditch utilized the
following names for that drainageway:

.Maverick Gulch
.No-Name Gulch
.No-Name Creek
.The head of Maverick Draw
.The head of Maverick Draw Gulch

It is possible to verify that. these refer to the same
ditch since the court order also provides a legal
description of the area referred to. Hereinafter,
reference made to any of the above names may be
understood to be the waterway in Gurley Canyon.

IV-20
