I

I

I

D. Topography and Climate

I

The Brook Forest Water District is located in mountainous terrain in the

Rocky Mountain Front Range. Elevations range from 7900 to 8700 feet in the

. district with all existing residences located below the 8400 feet elevation.

As indicated by the contours in Figure-2 (Page 13) the terrain is steep with

average slopes of 15 to 25 percent. Vegetation is predominately Ponderosa

Pine forests with poor ground cover.

I

I

I

The closest U.S. Weather Bureau station is located in Evergreen, approxi-

mately 5 miles northeast. A weather station in Conifer records only precipita-

tion. The Evergreen.station is at the 7000 foot elevation and therefore may

not reflect the winter temperature extremes experienced at Brook Forest. The

Brook Forest area will be somewhat colder in the winter months due to its

higher elevation. However, an analysis of the Ev~rgreen records gives an

indication of the duration and severity of winter temperatures at Brook Forest

which have caused water line and storage tank freezing problems. The following

information was derived from the data for. the years 1968 through 1979. All

numbers are averages from the period.

I

I

I

I

* First day that the temperature drops below 230 F. The winter of 1978 - 79 was

o
below 32 F from early November to
the coldest since the Brook Forest

I

Water District was formed. These severe winter conditions presented the

district with water line freezing problems unprecedented in the history of

the district. Mean temperatures were 6 to 9 degrees below normal in.December

1978 and January 1979.
