The company is run by a manager, serving
under a board of directors elected by the shareholding water
users of Beaver Park. The company purchased the water system
from the City of Colorado Springs for $1,750,000 on January
20, 1977.
The Beaver Park irrigation system was developed in the
early 1900's by investors from Colorado Springs under the
name of Beaver Water and Irrigation Company, The original
developers combined a variety of small water rights from
along Beaver Creek, built an on-stream reservoir and con-
structed the main irrigation supply ditch for Beaver Park,
The water was supplied to water users who did not own shares
in the irrigation company and also to large tracts of land
which were company-owned,
The dam on Beaver Creek washed out in 1921 and Brush
Hollow Dam was built at the west end of the supply ditch in
about 192), This change in storage location made a consider-
able change in timing of irrigation deliveries,
Thecompany passed through a variety of owners during the
years until the City of Colorado Springs purchased the system
in 1976, The water users then organized and formed the pres-
ent company and Colorado Springs agreed to sell the system to
the water users. After some 70 years, the irrigation system
was owned by its water users,
The original irrigation system was planned to supply
water to 10-acre tracts of land. The land under the ditch
was all subdivided into 10 acre units and the apparent crops
planned were to be fruit and vegetables, The original company
owned several large apple orchards which were cultivated by
its employees. The water users under the original system had
water certificates which would provide 1,5 acre feet per acre,
