.

.

North Fork River Improvement Project at Midway

Scope of Work
August 22, 2001

Backqround

The North Fork River Improvement Association is proposing the rehabilitation of
approximately 3 miles of channel and floodplain on the North Fork of the
Gunnison River between the towns of Paonia and Hotchkiss, Numerous studies
have shown that accelerated bank erosion and degraded fish and wildlife habitat
along the North Fork of the Gunnison River are primarily due to channelization,
This project will implement various stabilization and conservation techniques in
the floodplain and riparian areas for preservation, enhancement, and protection
along the North Fork in a public/private partnership, The riparian, wetland and
natural floodplain areas within this project will first be identified and mapped in
order to preserve them before redesigning the stream channel. A new channel
will then be engineered to consolidate several small braided channels into a
meandering stream system that mimics the natural morphology of stable sections
within the watershed, The floodplain will be graded to prevent entrenchment of
the channel and ensure flooding on a well-vegetated floodplain during high flow
events, This will further encourage deposition of silt on the floodplain and natural
recruitment of native riparian vegetation, All excavated areas above the average
high water mark will be replanted with willows, cottonwoods, and other native
species, Natural revetment and bioengineering techniques such as root wads,
rock vanes, and random boulder clusters will be incorporated into the design to
help reduce bank erosion and enhance aquatic habitat. Conservation easements
will be put in place to ensure that encroachment into the floodplain will not
happen again in the future, A 9-acre parcel owned by Delta County will be
opened to the public for access to the river and two irrigation diversions will be
reconstructed to improve water delivery efficiency and eliminate the need for
annual gravel push-up dams in the channel.

Tasks

All funds awarded by the Colorado Water Conservation Board shall be used for
planning and engineering of the project.

Task 1: Survey and Topography $15,000

a) GPS survey

b) Preparation of topographic base map

c) Completion of digital topographic base map with property boundaries
delineated

d) Completion of existing thalweg profile

Appendix 1 to Contract C150084
