The geologic and geotechnical investigation at that
time was limited to a literature search and field visit. The Snowball
Creek dam sites were selected over the Turkey Creek sites primarily on a
cost basis although there were also advantages from a geological
standpoint.

Geologic maps indicate a landslide at the upper end of the proposed
Turkey Creek site and none at the Snowball site. The topographic
position of the Snowball Creek site would also allow gravity feed of the
water to the treatment plant, and eliminate the need to use the existing
water line from the Turkey Creek site which requires considerable
maintenance and upkeep.

Two axes were considered for the Snowball site. The lower axis was
selected for several reasons including less private acreage was affected
and there was evidence of some surface landslides on the left abutment.

The dam on Snowball Creek examined by the feasibility study would be 138
feet high, require 1,167,000 cubic yards of embankment and store 2900
acre-feet.

The results of the subsurface investigation are reported in the
following chapters.

1
