As with Permastran, PVC could be used in areas
wi th corrosi ve soi 1 s (although these areas wou1 d be 1 imi ted to
places where working pressures plus water hammer pressures are
less than 235 psi). There exists the potential of mixing pve
and Permastran to provide an entire non-corrosive line.

o Prestressed concrete cylinder pipe is an acceptable pipe. It
requires very detailed alignment data and designs to allow
custom fabri cati on to meet fi el d condi ti ons. Prestressed
concrete cylinder pipe is considered by many engineering
organizations to be the most desirable type of pipe, it
provides an extremely good joint system utilizing a be11-and-
spigot machined to exact dimensions. Thrust restraint is
easily obtained by welding the steel be11-and-spigot.

3.6 Geology

The Cortez- Towaoc pi pel i ne route 1 i es on the northern fl ank of the Mesa Verde
Basi n, a broad syncl i ne centere<:l about 15 mil es southeast of Towaoc. The di p
of the rocks along the route is generally south to southeast at about two
degrees or less.

From the head of the line south to about Highway 160 the herlrock is sandstone
of the Oakota Formation. The Oakota is Cretaceous in age, and is generally
yellowish-brown to gray quartzitic thick bedded sandstone. Within the
formation are beds of shale, siltstone, and thin limestone. A swamp found in
Secti on 19, west of Totten Reservoi r, obscures the Oakota, a1 though several
small hil 1 s on the eastern edge of the swamp are supported by thi n 1 imestone
beds of the formation.

lJownstreal'l of Highway 160, in Sections 30 and 31, the Oakota is covered by a
thick mantle of loam along McElmo \~ash and the right side of Rocky Ford

3-24

l060c
