The AWWA recommenrlations for high
value districts for populations up to 5,000 people are summarized in Table 3.4.

===============================================================================

Table 3.4
AWWA Recommended Fire-Flows

1,000
1,500
2,000
3,000
4,000
5,000

Flow
Requ ired
gpm

1,000
1,250
1,500
1,750
2,000
2,250

Equivalent
in cfs

2.2
2.8
3.4
3.9
4.5
5.0

Durati on
(hr)

4
5
6
7
R
9

Total Volume Needed
in Gallons

Popu1 ati on

240,000
375,000
540,000
735,000
9'i0,000
1,215,000

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the incoming supply line is just large enough to meet the daily peaking
requirements, then this fire reserve should be available in storage. The
existing condition of 650,000 gallons of storage for a 1,330 population
appears to be more than adequate. From Tabl e 3.4 it is estimated that
doubling of the Towaoc water user population to 2,660 people would result in a
recormlendati on of approximately 600,000 gallons of storage reserved for fi re
use. The existing storage would also be sufficient for that condition, with
almost no residual storage remaining to assist in lowering the pipeline peak
flow.

3.3.2 Other Storage Requirements

As previously mentioned, there are other storage characteristics in the
terminal reservoir system that have a bearing on pipeline rlesign flows and
pipe si zi ng. Thi s storage, commonl y referred to as "di stri buti on storage," is
that water that has been treatel and is avail abl e for di stri buti on. "lith a
20-m;le pipeline being the single incoming supply conduit, provision must also
be made for emergency down time as well as for havi"g adequate storage to
justify using the 10-day peaking factor instead of providing capacity to serve
the instantaneous peak flow.

3-9

1060c
