Montrose is

located approximately 70 miles to the northeast, Cortez approximately 100 miles

to the south, and Grand Junction approximately 125 miles to the north. The

main transportation route into the area is State Highway 145 and County Road 44

ZS.

All project lands lie in the San Miguel River drainage basin. The San

Miguel River is tributary to the Dolores River. Water that enters the project

area is collected from high mountain water sheds to the south and east. The

present main source of water to the Cone Reservoir is the Cone Ditch which

transports water from Lone Cone Mountain in the Uncompahgre National Forest.

Drawing 1124-1 is a regional location map that includes the project area.

SITE DESCRIPTION

The existing Cone Reservoir is located in Section 12, T43N, R13, N.M.

Principal Meridian. The reservoir is impounded by a low (maximum height is

23.5 feet), long (about 2,800 feet) earthfill dam. Crest elevation is :!:8325

feet. Plans to enlarge the reservoir include raising the dam by approximately

20 feet and lengthening the dam by about 1,050 feet on the right (north)

abutment and about 1,700 feet on the left (south) abutment, increasing the

capacity of the reservoir by approximately 4,000 acre-feet and inundating

portions of Sections 1 and 13, T43N, Range 13 West.

INVESTIGATIONS

Geologic field reconnaissance was performed in November, 1983. Augering

and drilling of the right abutment and dam were conducted in November/December,

1983, and May/June, 1984. Seven test borings ranginJ\ from 15 to 50 feet in

depth were drilled. Geologic logs of these test borings are included in

-2-
